It is my firm conviction that trading unofficial recordings does not hurt the bands in question, or their record companies, but benefits everyone. Since this music is not officially released or available to purchase, no one is losing money through 'lost sales' as they would, say, if I were trading music which is available in stores. Additionally, through the spreading of this music, fans (who in most cases have purchased all the 'officially' released music of their favorite artist) are able to continually add more variety to the recordings they have to listen to, thereby sustaining interest in the band longer, which in turn inspires them to continue buying the official releases, attending concerts, buying t-shirts etc. Everyone benefits.
